TOKYO: The 39th Tokyo International Film Festival began under a rainy sky, but the atmosphere was far from gloomy. The red carpet, a symbol of the festival's prestige, felt special to those who walked it, including festival navigator NAKAJIMA Kento. Despite the rain, Nakajima described it as a wonderful rain of blessings that reflected the future of film, adding a sense of excitement to the event.

The festival features a wide array of programming sections designed to showcase diverse cinematic experiences. The Gala Selection presents highly anticipated works before their Japanese release, including 19 films and five shorts. World Focus highlights global industry trends and diverse cultures, featuring works from places like Taiwan and Australia.

The Animation section introduces nine domestic and international films, along with a special focus on female directors and related symposiums. Women's Empowerment explores women's perspectives and life realities through international cinema, while Special Screenings offer popular works that transcend borders and genres.

A new addition, Crosscut Asia Plus, co-organized with the Japan Foundation, highlights Southeast Asian film culture with six films selected under the theme Side by Side. Nippon Cinema Classics honors Japanese film history, including a special tribute to director MIZOGUCHI Kenji.

The Youth section continues to nurture the next generation through the YOUTH KINGS Film School, now in its 10th year, and the Asian Student Film Conference provides a competitive platform for student works from across Asia.

Kento Nakajima, serving as the festival navigator, expressed his excitement about the event. He spoke about how movies can be a catalyst for life-changing experiences and encouraged attendees to immerse themselves in films they might not normally choose. He emphasized the importance of the festival as a place where the world gathers, noting that he looks forward to moments where the door to the world opens.

The ceremony also introduced the jurors for various sections. The Nippon Cinema Now jury includes MACHIDA Machorei, MURATA Chieko, and Sabrina Kanachevsky.

The Asian Future section features MIZUNO Eriko, and Yulianina Bara. The International Competition jury, led by Jury President Rolf de Heer, brings together filmmakers from diverse backgrounds — actors, colorists, and producers — all united by their passion for cinema and their respect for Japanese masters like Ozu, Oshima, and Kurosawa.
